Manager Louis van Gaal
believes the 32-year-old may prove a reliable and valuable squad player even
though the club would have to pay out high wages in order to secure him on a
relatively short-term deal.
Alves said this week: 'I
may have two feet in the team but I've also got one foot, my body and nearly my
head out of the club.
'I would like to stay
here but not at any price. Not only in terms of money but in terms of respect.
If I'm not shown that respect, I'll go to another club.'
United
have had a long-standing interest in Southampton full back Nathaniel Clyne but
the young England star has also been offered a new contract at his current
club.
Meanwhile, it is
understood United have cooled initial interest in Valencia's Argentinean
central defender Nicolas Otamendi.
The South American has a
£35million buy-out clause in his contract in Spain and wants to leave the club.
United, however, are not currently pursuing the deal.
