Roger Federer beats Gael Monfils to set up all-Swiss clash with Stan Wawrinka in French Open quarter-finals

Roger Federer reached the quarter-finals of the French Open with a 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-1 defeat of local favourite Gael Monfils on Monday.

The match, resuming at one-set all on Court Philippe Chatrier after being held over from Sunday, began with the second-seeded Swiss breaking serve.

Federer, who had lost his two previous encounters against the 13th-seeded Frenchman, never looked back and went on to complete his fourth victory over Monfils at Roland Garros.

He next faces compatriot Stan Wawrinka, the eighth seed.
British No 1 Andy Murray also reached the last eight at Roland Garros with a four set 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-2 defeat of another Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Murray now meets evergreen Spaniard David Ferrer, who took just an hour and 50 minutes to overcome U.S Open champion Marin Cilic 6-2 6-4 6-4 and he will need to find another level to come through that.

Nonetheless he will bring with him the experience of having reached the quarter finals or better in his last seventeen Grand Slam events – a record of hugely impressive consistency.
