Former Flying Eagles coach, John Obuh, has opined that the Nigeria U20 team got carried away, hence their 2-4 loss to Brazil in their opening fixture of the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Obuh, who has led Nigeria to two U20 World Cups believes having
come from a goal down to level the score at 2-2 at half time, the players must
have thought their job was done.
"I
think they probably got carried away". "Having come from a goal down
to tie at 2-2 at half time, they must have thought the job was done” says Obuh.
"They
thought it was game over, forgetting that a team like Brazil can use just five
minutes to get what they want”. "I
think it's a psychological thing because it shouldn't have happened," Obuh
posited.
The
former Golden Eaglets coach also went on to say most of the Nigerian players
just didn't show up on the day.
"Most
of the players just couldn't get into the game," he said.
"A
player like Kelechi Iheanacho for example was nowhere to be found. He should
have been more involved in the game but it wasn't.
"It
is always better to start a competition with a win or a draw at least because
that gives the players some confidence going into the next game.
"But when you lose, most times, the players are frightened
and corrections may not the effect because they don't want to make mistakes.
"The coaches must involve a lot of psychology now to get the
players prepared for the next game," Obuh added.
