Nigeria’s Super Falcons will fly out
of the country tonight for the 7th FIFA Women’s World Cup finals. The
contingent will fly out of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja,
aboard an Air France aircraft at 8pm.
They are expected to arrive in Paris
on Wednesday morning before connecting another flight to Toronto, Canada. Coach
Edwin Okon and 10 other officials will travel with 26 players while two others,
Captain Evelyn Nwabuoku and striker Francesca Ordega will join the team at the team’s
training camp in Toronto.
Okon had on Sunday dropped eight
players which include Chisom Henry, Yetunde Adeboyejo, Chioma Wogu, Onyinyechi
Okeke, Gladys Akpa, Ramatu Abdulkarim, Winifred Eyebhokia and Chinaza Uchendu
from the squad.
Team Co-ordinator, Henrietha Ukaigwe,
says the team is in good shape to take part in the tournament. In a chat on
Tuesday, Ukaigwe sounded a word of confidence.
“We are set to travel tonight by 8pm
and I can assure you that the team is ready for the task”.
While in Canada, the African
champions will play a friendly with the Senior Women National Team of Canada on
May 25, the day, Coach Okon will name his final list of 23 players. The Falcons will face Sweden in their first
match of the World Cup in Winnipeg on June 8, before Australia in Winnipeg and
USA in Vancouver in Group D.
After six previous editions of the
FIFA Women’s World Cup, the best stage the Falcons have reached is the quarter
-finals in the United States in 1999.
