Winning is a habit that
has yet to be rediscovered by Laura Robson, who could not stop herself from
faltering when in sight of victory in the US Open first round.
The former British No 1,
coming back from a long term wrist injury, led Russia’s Elena Vesnina 4-0 in
the deciding set but was unable to close it out and ended up going down 3-6,
6-3, 7-5.
Seeking what would have
been her first Grand Slam win in two years – following a near 18-month hiatus –
21-year-old Robson looked set to triumph but her reservoir of self-belief
remains too shallow.
