Warri Wolves crashed out of the
CAF Confederation Cup , after losing to AC Leopard of Congo 4-3 on aggregate on
Saturday.
The return leg match played at the Warri City Stadium saw the
Seasiders recorded a 3-1 win over their Cogolese visitors.
Wolves who were Nigeria’s only hope on the continent, failed to
overturn a 3-0 deficit they suffered in the first leg tie at the Stade Denis
Sassou Nguesso on Sunday May 17.
The visiting team had two chances to score in the first ten
minutes of the game. They were repelled by Wolves goalie Daniel Akpeyi.
Wolves gradually settled down as they searched for the much needed
goals in front of their fans in Warri.
Michael Okoyoh fired his effort wide when put through on goal,
while Solomon Kwambe saw his 13th minute free-kick struck the cross bar.
Freedom Omofoman was wasteful when he ought to have put his team
ahead in an action filled first half.
The first stanza ended 0-0 in Warri.
Wolves took the lead
through Gbolahan Salami as early as the third minute of the second half to give
the Nigerian side hope. It meant Wolves needed to score 3 more goals to qualify.
Leopard fought back to restore
parity in the 52nd minute through a strike from Guelor Bhebey Ndey.
Twenty minutes after the equalizer, Salami scored the second goal
to give Wolves a 2-1 lead over Leopard.
One minute to the end of the entertaining match, Oghenekaro Etebo
netted the 4th goal of the game, but it was too late as the home team crashed
out of the second tier club competition in Africa.
