Former FC Ebedie striker, Obafemi Martins got a brace as Seattle Sounders humble New York City FC 3-1 in a MLS match at the Bronx on May 3.
New York FC, struggling for form just couldn't get a desired win as Nigeria international Obafemi Martins brace and a goal from Clint Dempsey ensured that their poor run continues.
In the 23rd minute Martins raced through on goal before he slot calmly beyond the New York goalkeeper to give Sounders the lead but New York responded almost immediately with two attempts that went so close with both Pablo Alvarez and Jeb Brovsky narrowly missing the target from close range.
As though a renewed hope for New York in the second half was obvious, a Mehdi Ballouchy goal saw wild celebrations amongst the home fans in the 54th minute. Former Barcelona forward David Villa, who had missed the last two games due to injury, came on for New York FC but that inclusion didn't make much impact as Clint Dempsey increased Sounders lead in the 58th minute.
The well-travelled Nigeria internationa got his brace in the match that silenced the home fans at the Yankee Stadium in the 67th minute, 1-3. Martins made good use of his speed when he raced to a well-placed through pass from Marco Pappa that resulted in a cool finish.
Obafemi Martins, whose club, Sounders FC, have won thrice in a row now, leads the MLS goal chart with six goals.
