Portugal’s Carlos Leon has been appointed the Table Tennis Sport Manager for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The position takes effect from Tuesday, September 1, 2015. But, in the meantime he is fulfilling the role of Consultant with immediate effect.
A Physical Education and Sport Management teacher, he will work alongside the host nation’s Edimilson Pinheiro, the Competition Manager and Roberto Siviero, the Sport Competition General Manager.
Before now, Carlos León was the President of the Madeira Table Tennis Association in Portugal from 2000 to 2007, having been Vice President from 1992 to 2000. Later from 2007 to 2010, he took up the role of Vice President of the Madeira Sports Institute, prior to being elected President of the Portuguese Table Tennis Federation.
“I'm very optimistic in relation to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games”, said Carlos Leon. “In the first five months working as Consultant for table tennis and after my first visit to the Rio 2016 Headquarters at the beginning of April, for a very intensive and productive week of meetings and working closely with Edimilson Pinheiro, I feel we have many of the necessary conditions to have great events.”
The table tennis events at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be held from August 6 – 17. 2016.
