Copa announces international retirement
Côte d’Ivoire keeper Boubacar ‘Copa’ Barry announced his international retirement in a video posted on his Facebook account on Monday.
“All good things must come to an end. I have decided to put an end to my career with the Côte d’Ivoire’s national team. I was proud to wear our colours,” the 35-year-old said, after thanking the Ivoirian Football Federation officials, all his teammates and especially former Côte d’Ivoire keeper Jean-Jacques Tizié, his predecessor between the posts.
Copa earned 99 caps with the Elephants since his first call-up against Tunisia in June 2000, competing at three FIFA World Cup and seven Africa Cup of Nations finals.
And while he had lost his number 1 spot to Sylvain Gbohouo during their 2015 AFCON qualifying campaign, he will be remembered as the hero of the final against Ghana after leading the Elephants to continental glory in a dramatic penalty shootout in Bata.
As did his fellow teammate Kolo Touré, the Lokeren keeper couldn’t have pulled down the curtain on a 15-year-long international career on a higher note.
